History

Marin County was one of the counties that were introduced to

the state in 1850.  The origin of the name has not been

clarified. One possibility is that the name was Chief Marin, the

leader of the Indian tribe of Licatiut. This tribe inhabited the

area and defended against the Spanish conquerors. The other

version says that the bay between San Pedro and San Quentin

was called Bahía de Nuestra Senora del Rosario la Marinera in

1775. It is quite possible that Marin is an abbreviation of this somewhat unwieldy name.

Geography

According to the Census Bureau, the county has a total area of ​​2,144.5 km²; of which 1,346.8 km² land and 797.7 km² (37.24%) is water.

Pacific Ocean (west) being on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge that links it with San Francisco, Marin County is renowned throughout the world for its natural beauty, liberal politics, and its richest county status in the United States. Its inhabitants are mainly clustered on the eastern side of the county.
