History

El Dorado is created in 1850. Parts of its territory

were subsequently given to the county of Amador in

1854 and to the county of Alpine in 1864. The

name of the county evokes the history of Eldorado,

a famous region where gold was discovered.

James W. Marshall discovered gold in 1848 in Coloma, a name they called this region as well. The name was retained when the county was established.

Geography

The county is located in the area of ​​influence of Sacramento, the capital of California; which means that part of its territory is subject to the phenomenon of periurbanization. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,786 square miles (4,630 km2), of which 1,708 square miles (4,420 km2) is land and 78 square miles (200 km2) (4.4%) is water.
