History

Madera County was formed in 1893 from parts of the Fresno

County. Madera means in Spanish wood. The name of the

county dates back to the city of Madera, which was a center

of local forestry at the end of the 19th century.

Geography

According to the Census Bureau, the county has a total area

of 5,580 km², of which land is 5,530 km and 41 km² (0.8%) is

water.

Madera County is located in the Central Valley north of Fresno

County and thus in the geographic center of the federal state.

The southern part of Yosemite National Park is located in the

northeast of the county.
