History

Fresno County was founded in 1856 from parts of

Mariposa, Merced and Tulare counties. Fresno is

Spanish for "ash tree" and it was in recognition of the

abundance of the shrubby local Ash, Fraxinus dipetala,

growing along the San Joaquin River that it received

its name.

Geography

According to the US Census Bureau, the county has

a total area of 15 585 km 2, of which 15 443 km 2 of

land and 142 km 2 of water, or 0.91% of the total.

The county is bordered to the west by a coastal range

and to the east by the Sierra Nevada. It is the center of

a large agricultural region, the Central Valley of

California.
