History

Tehama County was founded in 1856 from Butte County, Colusa

County and Shasta County. The county was named after the city

of Tehama. Possible origins are in the Arabic word Tehama ("hot

downs "), in the Spanish word tejamanil or "high water" in the dialect

of the Indians of North America .

A total of 10 buildings and sites of the counties are registered in the

National Register of Historic Places.

According to the Census Bureau United States, Tehama County has an area of 7,672 km²; of which 7,643.1 km² is land and 28.5 km² (0.38%) is water. A small part of the Lassen Volcanic National Park extends to the northeast of its territory.
