History
Calaveras County was founded in 1850. In 1854 parts of
its original area were handed over to Alpine County. Other
parts were added to Amador County in 1864. Calaveras
means skulls. The name was given to the County of the
Calaveras River, discovered on an expedition by the
Spanish explorer Gabriel Moraga. Gabriel Moraga saw
many skulls on the banks of the river that inspired him to
name it that.
In the 19th century, Calaveras County became
internationally known for the short story of Mark Twain,
The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, published in 1865. In honor of Mark Twain and its history, the Calaveras County Fairgrounds, Angels Camp celebrates a major folk festival every year in May, combined with a jumping frog jubilee.
